Allan Hartwell Dyer

Allan Hartwell Dyer, a long-time Indianapolis resident, passed away on December 9 from medical complications shortly after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Allan, known to his family as "Lan," was born on January 20, 1938 in Syracuse, NY and moved with his family to Indianapolis in 1945. He was predeceased by his parents, William Allan Dyer, Jr. and Marian Blumer Dyer. Allan had a close and loving family and is survived by his brother, William Edward Dyer (Bill), Bill's wife Pamela Thomas Dyer, nephews Bill Dyer and Greg Dyer and his wife, Lori, grand nephews Cameron McKenney and Will Dyer and a grand niece, Kiki Dyer.

Allan graduated from Shortridge High School in 1956 and Denison University in 1960. His business career spanned 33 years in advertising management positions with the Indianapolis Star & News. Allan's father also had a long career at the Star & News where he became President of Indianapolis Newspapers, Inc., parent of the newspapers. Throughout and after his business career, Allan enjoyed his associations with The Athletic Club, The Dramatic Club and Woodstock Club. In addition to several company boards, he also served on several not-for-profit community boards including the Indianapolis Humane Society, the Indianapolis Urban League and the March of Dimes. He also was actively involved in the United Way of Central Indiana and the Lacy Executive Leadership Program. His passions included auto racing (he owned an Indy Lights racing team), travelling and art. He also was an avid anglophile and hosted family, friends and frequent guests at his at-home British Pub, "Cognac's," named after his dearly loved Bouvier.

Allan requested no formal services or memorials, but his life will be celebrated by family and close friends. In lieu of flowers or contributions in his memory, Allan's last wishes were typical of his attitude about life..."simply have fun."
