Angelo Ray Marra,
98 of Fishers went to heaven on March 28, 2021. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Angelo and Mary Marra on August 8, 1922. Ray was a WWII hero. He was inducted into the US Army at Camp Perry, OH in 1943. He did his basic training with the 371st Core of Engineers becoming Master Sergeant at Camp Ellis, Canton, IL. From there he was shipped to Calcutta, India where he spent six months. Master Sergeant Ray “flew the hump” to Kun Ming, China as part of the CBI Theatre. There he boarded a truck and traveled 300 miles along the hairpin curves of the Burma Road going approximately ten miles an hour to Quang, China. Their purpose there was to build new facilities for the incoming GIs. He remained there until the end of the war in 1946. He joined his father and brothers, working in the construction business.
Ray, with his brothers, Anthony and Ronald, and a partner, Victor Scaravelli, owned and operated S&M Constructors in Solon, Ohio. The dual family business was founded by Angelo “Charlie” Marra and Joseph Scaravelli, who immigrated from Italy. The founding fathers brought their sons into the business and the group on six revolutionized the construction industry through their invention of the JARVA Boring Machine for digging tunnels. The technology and equipment was sold to Atlas Copco in Sweden. They participated in the joint ventures that built many subways including Washington D.C.’s subway, San Francisco’s B.A.R.T. and some tunnels in Atlanta. Ray sold his interest in the company in 1979 and retired.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was an avid golfer. Ray was also a member of Indian Wells Country Club and St. Francis of Assisi in Indian Wells, CA, and Hawthorns Country Club and St. Louis de Montfort of Fishers, IN and Columbia Club, Indianapolis.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Loretta; children, Randy R. (Janett) Marra, Michael (Kathy) Marra, Kelly Henke, Dr. Philip (Carolyn) Dulberger and Holly Dulberger (Scott) Whitaker; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Adair) Marra; sisters, Josephine (Tony) Giotti, and Gloria (Steve) Volpe.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Marra and sisters,Rose Mastrey, Helen Bigus; sister-in-law, Corina Gundrum; and by his brother-in-law, Robert Townsend.
There will be no visitation due to current Covid restrictions. A funeral mass will be held at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church, 11441 Hague Rd, Fishers, IN 46038 at 11 AM on Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Entombment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
