Barbara Evlynn Bailie

July 19, 1939 — March 1, 2016

Barbara Evlynn Greenberg Bailie,
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Evlynn Greenberg Bailie, 76, on March 1, 2016, in Scottsdale, Arizona, after a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Barb was born on July 19,1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to Betty and Harry Greenberg, and raised in Rockford, Illinois. She attended The University of Michigan on a journalism scholarship from the Rockford Register-Republic, where she was an active member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority, Chairman of Sorority Rush, and President of Panhellenic Association. As a member of the student government, Barb had the thrill of witnessing President John F. Kennedy as he announced the Peace Corps from the steps of the U of M Union Building.

During her freshman year, Barbara met Stephen K. Bailie and they married the day after she graduated college. After a two day honeymoon in Cincinnati, they settled in Indianapolis, where Steve attended dental school and orthodontic training.

Barb worked as a city desk reporter for the Indianapolis News until the birth of her first child, Mindie.

She then attended Indiana University, where she received her Master's Degree in Social Work. Barbara worked as an OB/GYN social worker at St. Vincent's Hospital before establishing a private psychotherapy practice which she maintained for 38 years, before retiring in January, 2016.
Barb enjoyed being an active member of the community in roles such as Chairman of: The Junior Group of the Women's Committee of the Indiana State Symphony Society, both The United Way Helpline and Community Service Councils, The National Council of Jewish Women, through which she recently helped launch the BullySafe Program in schools, and The Jewish Federation's Partnership with Israel Program, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. Barb was a productive Board Member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Coleman Adoption Services, Family Service Association. Barbara continually displayed her deep commitment to human relations and served on the Panel of American Women, an interfaith, interracial panel which promoted understanding between diverse groups.

Barb's passions and priorities were evident in the way she devoted herself to family. She was preceded in death in 2001, by daughter Mindie, who lived an exemplary life despite multiple congenital heart defects; her beloved husband, Steve, who passed away in 2013; her brother, Richard; and her parents. She is survived by her son, David (Amy) and grandchildren, Braden and Aubrie of Scottsdale, Arizona; her daughter, Terri (Steve) Allen and grandchildren, Danielle and Tyler of Royce City, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Although Barbara had an affinity with Colorado, her unquenchable appetite for adventure and travel led her to explore all over the world, including her trip to Nepal in 2014 and Inca Trail hike in the Andes of Peru. Her affection for healthy expeditions included many hikes and bicycle rides, while her love of music led her to play the mountain dulcimer, regrettably without natural aptitude.
Barbara was blessed with an abundant family of friends across the globe, who enriched her life immensely. She will be missed!

A funeral service will be held at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, 6501 North Meridian Street, on Monday, March 7th at 2 PM. Burial will follow in Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation North Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Mindie Bailie Memorial Fund, which supports The Red Shoes Award Program at Riley Hospital for Children, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Arrangements entrusted to A.R.N. Funeral & Cremation Services. Friends may leave a memory or message of condolence by visiting the online obituary at www.arnmortuary.com.
