Barbara Sue Plank, age 90 years, passed away on June 22 in her home in Carmel, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leon Plank, on October 30, 1989.
Barbara Sue was born on June 18, 1928 in Marion, Indiana to parents Sylvia and Charles Spiegal. She was the youngest of three daughters, June (Fisch) and Louise (Hoffman). Barbara Sue grew up in Anderson, Indiana. After graduating from Anderson High School, she attended Indiana University, Bloomington, then The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. In 1949, Barbara Sue returned to Indiana, married Leon Plank, and moved to Muncie, Indiana. After the birth of their first daughter, Sandi, they moved to Marion, Indiana, where they had two more daughters, Terri and Connie. The family belonged to Sinai Temple. Summers were spent at Lake Wawasee, where the family eventually established year-round residence. Barbara Sue returned to Marion after the death of her husband, where she spent many active years.
In Marion, Indiana, Barbara Sue was a member and officer of Sinai Temple Sisterhood, Sunday School teacher at Sinai Temple, volunteer for Dolls for Democracy, and enjoyed Conversation Club. She will be remembered for her love of dramatic arts, reading, bridge, her extensive vocabulary, get togethers with friends and family, and her keen sense of style and aesthetics.
Barbara Sue is survived by her loving family: sister, Louise Hoffman, Long Branch, NJ; daughters, Sandi and husband Benton Marks of Carmel, IN, and their children Hillary, Rachel, and son-in-law Gary; Terri and husband Jim Schrager of Mishawaka, IN, and their children Max and Michael; and Connie and husband Mark Tossman of Indianola, WA, and their children Courtney and David.
Private services will be held in Carmel, Indiana. Memorial donations in memory of Barbara Sue may be made to the Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis or the Humane Society.
