Beatrice M. Lewis

April 18, 1931 — July 18, 2016

"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now....for I shall not pass this way again." - William Penn

Beatrice Margaret Lewis, 85 of Indianapolis passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family on July 18th, 2016. Her life's work can best be described as a caretaker and nurturer to many. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved music, flowers, birds, poetry and spending time with her family.

She was born April 18th, 1931 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was raised by her mother, Lucille Hartranft and father, Leon Hartranft along with her sisters Blanche Hogentogler, Alice Frymyer, Patricia Wisniewski, and brother, Leon Hartranft, Jr. She graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1948. She would often reflect on how happy her time was as a student there.

She soon after met her husband, Robert William Lewis Sr. They were married on February 12th, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, PA. They were happily married for 62 years until his passing on July 28th, 2015. The best way to remember them is to remember them dancing; a skill they were known and adored for; most notably the jitter bug.

She was a Teacher's Aide at Nora Elementary for Special Education for several years. This career afforded her the opportunity to meet First Lady, Nancy Reagan, with her students in Washington D.C. during one of the Special Olympics ceremonies. It was also around this time that she found her favorite past time, Jazzercise, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She was often recognized for high attendance and enthusiasm. This past time also helped her create several meaningful and long last friendships that she maintained up until her passing. She will be remembered for her vivacious presence and love and zest for life. It was very important to her that she pass on family stories, history and memories. She would frequently recant joyful memories of her beloved parents and childhood; especially her mother, who she described as a gifted singer, piano player and poet.

Beatrice is survived by her sons, Robert Lewis Jr. and wife Linda Lewis, Kevin Lewis (deceased), Stephen Lewis and wife Lee Ann Lewis, and her daughter, Melissa Lewis. Also by her grandchildren, Sean Lewis and wife Catherine, Vanessa Morrison, Maggie Broyles, Danielle Flynn and husband Leo Flynn Jr., Stephen Lewis and Nicholas Poore. Finally by her great grandchildren, Isabelle Murphy, Audree' Lewis and Elina Poore.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 27th at 5 PM at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

Arrangements entrusted to A.R.N. Funeral & Cremation Services. Friends may leave a memory or message of condolence by visiting the online obituary at http://www.arnmortuary.com/.
