Betty J. Gapinski
89, of Carmel, Indiana passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on May 8, 2017. Born September 7, 1927 in Calumet City, Illinois, she was the daughter of Frank and Sylvia (Waliczek) Borowski.
Betty was a graduate of Thornton Fractional Township High School in Calumet City, Illinois. On May 11, 1946, Betty married Darrell J. Gapinski and they were happily wed for over 33 years. Betty worked in retail sales for many years at the Potpourri Gift shop in Calumet City, Illinois and at the Blue Bird Gift Shop in Glenwood, Illinois. She deeply appreciated the craftsmanship and beauty of the artistic products she helped customers select. She also served as a volunteer at Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana, where she helped patients' families through difficult days in their lives. She was a lifelong member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Lansing, Illinois. Betty loved to travel. Over the years she made numerous trips to Europe and enjoyed sharing her travel experiences with family and friends. Betty was also a great lover of animals. No stray dog or cat would go without rescue or be unfed. Pets were always an important part of her life.
Betty is survived by her son, D. Mark (Connie) Gapinski of Zionsville and two grandchildren, Zachary A. Gapinski of Zionsville and Aliya E. Gapinski also of Zionsville.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Darrell J. Gapinski; her parents, Frank and Sylvia Borowski; two sisters, Irene (Borowski) Tomczak and Lillian (Borowski) Sytar; one brother, James Borowski; and her beloved cat, Peanut, a companion of 21 years.
A celebration of Betty's life will take place at the Stratford of West Clay, 2460 Glebe Street, Carmel Indiana on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 4:00pm in Sweet Hospitality. A Memorial Mass for Betty will take place at St. Ann Catholic Church, 3010 Ridge Road, Lansing, Illinois on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 10:00am.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Stratford Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Services for the kind and professional care Betty received over the past several months.
