Bohdan Kostyshyn

June 10, 1927 — October 28, 2018

Bohdan Kostyshyn, beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle died at 91 on October 28, 2018 after living a long and fulfilling life. He was called Dan by the many who knew and respected him.

Dan was born on June 10, 1927 to Ukrainian immigrant parents, Mathew and Tekla (Stawnycza) Kostyshyn in Jamaica, NY. Dan served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. He then attended Queens College where he obtained a BS degree in physics and where he played basketball. After his first job working in the Federal Bureau of Standards, he started a successful, 33 year career at IBM in Research and Development as a physicist. His research involved magnetic field measurements, magnetic material, and magnetic recording investigation. When first working at IBM, he lived in Apalachin, NY where he raised his family. During this time, he also completed his MS degree in physics from Syracuse University. While living in NY, he was a strong proponent of public education and served as a member of the Vestal School Board. Later in his career, Dan transferred with IBM to Charlotte, NC where he and his wife, Emma, lived for 36 years. After retiring from IBM, Dan taught engineering at Belmont Abbey College and fulfilled a lifelong dream of teaching. He recently moved to Indianapolis in the last few years.

Bohdan is survived by his loving wife, Emma (Erbacher) Kostyshyn and they celebrated 63 years of marriage. He is also survived by his 3 daughters; Karen Fletcher of Aspen, CO, Laura Scarbro of Carlisle, MA and her husband David, and Diane Kostyshyn of Indianapolis, IN and her husband Tim Sublett. and 4 loving grandchildren; Elleree Fletcher, Jamie Jaye Fletcher, Anthony Scarbo and Jacquelyn Sublett.

Although Bohdan lived his live as a scientist, he was extremely creative and was greatly admired for the beautiful pysanky or Ukrainian Easter Eggs that he created and he developed many innovative tools and techniques over the years. Dan also loved woodworking which included making pens and refinishing furniture and also taught himself to cane and thrush chair seats. He was an avid vegetable gardener and raised bees. He was brilliant at remembering trivia which helped when doing crossword puzzles.

Bohdan was a member of IEEE, the American Physical society and the American Association of Physics Teachers.
