Buford Eugene “Gene” Johnson,
82, passed away February 27, 2020. A lifelong resident of Lebanon, Gene was born August 31, 1937 to Buford J. Johnson and Sylvia Mantooth Johnson. He graduated from Kirklin High School in 1955 and proudly served in the Army Reserves until 1965. In his early career, Gene sold and serviced International trucks and farm equipment before becoming well known as a local plumbing and electrical contractor in and around Boone County. He received his degree from Southern Baptist University in 1990, was ordained in 1995, and served as pastor of the Lebanon Church of God for 27 years.
Gene was married to Wilma “Billie” Neese Johnson from 1963 until her death in 1989. He was later married to Rosella “Rosie” Meek Johnson until her passing in 2017. Gene was also preceded in death by his sister, Wilma Ferguson; and brother, Donald Johnson.
He is survived by his children, Keith and Richard Johnson of Lebanon, John Mantooth of Lebanon, and Sherri Bagwell and Kim Lotts of North Carolina; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, March 1st at the Lebanon Church of God, 726 N. Henry St., Lebanon. Visitation will be held from 1 PM until the time of the service. Burial will take place at a later date in Brown’s Wonder Cemetery.
