Carl C. Dykema, 91, died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.
He leaves his wife of 71 years, Muriel Muzzy Dykema; his three children, Carl Frederick (Skip) Dykema, Karen D. Jones, and Peter Drake Dykema. He also leaves seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Carl was born in 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Tunis Jacob Dykema and Marguerite Cappel Dykema and was one of seven children with three sisters and three brothers.
He graduated from Schenley High School in 1943 and was the Senior Class President.
Following high school, Carl enlisted in the Navy where he became an avid pilot, learning to fly on aircraft carriers.
He graduated from the Sheffield School of Engineering at Yale University in 1947.
Carl married Ruth Muriel Muzzy in 1948 in East Elmhurst, New York.
Carl worked in the Sales Department for General Electric. Carl and Muriel lived in New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York before moving to Indianapolis in 1954.
Carl's sales expertise coupled with his love of flying prompted him to start his own business. He eventually flew all over the country selling industrial components.
In 1969, Carl and Muriel became the proud owners of a farm in Zionsville. They spent the next 35 years in the Thoroughbred racing industry raising and racing their own bloodstock. This was a very rewarding and active time. Carl oversaw all the training and racing while Muriel managed the day to day operations on the farm.
In addition to their love of horses, Carl and Muriel were passionate world travelers. In the 1990's they took many international trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.
Visitation and services for Carl will be on Tuesday January 24th at Zionsville Fellowship Church, 9090 W Oak St, Zionsville, IN 46077.
Visitation is from 1:00-2:30 pm .Service is from 2:30-3:15 pm.
