Carol (Valentine) Baum,
84, of Brownsburg died Saturday, November 24, 2018. Carol was born on May 14, 1934 to Joe R. and Elsie (Leper) Valentine in Bicknell, Indiana. Growing up in Sullivan, Indiana, she graduated from Sullivan High School in 1952. Carol received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Indiana State Teachers College (now ISU) in 1956 and her M.S. degree in 1966. She married Robert Baum in 1960. They settled in Brownsburg to raise their children, Andrew and Timothy, and Carol taught briefly in Speedway and Brownsburg before spending the next 25 years of her career at Robey Elementary in Wayne Township (Indianapolis).
Carol had the generous heart of a teacher both in and out of the classroom. With a passion for helping the underserved, she loved her profession and spent much of her free time working with the church. Carol also loved travelling with her family, spending many summers in Europe and Hawaii.
Carol was a founding member of Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in Brownsburg, where she was honored as Woman of the Year in 2017. Prior to that, she was a long-time member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Baum; parents; sister, Phyllis Gunderson; brothers, Rex, Jack and Joe Max Valentine; sister-in-law, Louisa Valentine; sister-in-law, Ann Grubaugh Valentine; brother-in-law, Harold Gunderson; and niece, Valerie Gunderson Osiecki. Survivors include her sons, Andrew and Timothy (Natalie); grandchildren, Max and Elsie; sister, Diane (Harold) Metheny; nephew, David (Amy) Gunderson; nieces, Patti Valentine, Amy Metheny, Krista Metheny Hensley and Rachel Metheny.
Because Good Samaritan Episcopal Church is a church without walls, a celebration of Carol's life and death will be at Messiah Lutheran Church, 801 South Green Street, Brownsburg, IN 46112 on Saturday, December 15th at 2 PM with visitation one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Good Samaritan Episcopal Church (www.churchthatserves.org) and Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church (www.saintandrewindy.com).
