Carol Joan Blackston, recently of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on April 16, 2014.
Carol was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 4, 1931 to Frank and Viola Hoffmann.
She was active at Rufus King High School and in Jobs Daughters, where she met Richard Blackston. They were married in 1952 and would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary on May 10th.
Carol was a beloved member of the Milwaukee community where she raised three children. She was active in scouts and church. As a founding member of The Church of the Good Hope, she sang in the adult choir, started and led the children's choir and founded a food pantry in the basement of the church where she served the community for many years.
Carol worked with children in the Milwaukee Public Schools as a volunteer, an aide and finally as a teacher. After raising her children, and having worked 10 years as a general aide and 10 years as a paraprofessional, Carol went back to Alverno College where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in December, 1988. Carol taught 4th and 5th grades and served as Media Specialist until she retired.
Carol and Richard retired to Sun City, Arizona in June of 1997, joining her sister and brother in law in the "valley of the sun". Although never teaching in Arizona as she had hoped, she was active at New Song United Methodist Church where she gave to the children through Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and helped build a library for all ages. She loved the desert, hummingbirds, the warmth and her faithful, four legged companion, Trixie. Carol was happy to really know two of her great grandchildren while babysitting one day a week. Life was good.
Carol and Richard moved to Indianapolis in 2009 to be closer to their daughter and son-in law. Her last home was Sunrise on Old Meridian. Thank you to all at Sunrise for your care and to everyone at St. Vincent Hospice. You are indeed the hands of God.
Carol is survived by her husband, Richard; three children: Michael (Linda), Kevin (Lyn) and Suzanne Schwartz (Kerry); four grandchildren: Korie Mitchell (Jonathan), Jeremy (Catherine), Jason (Lisa), Adam (Elizabeth); and six great grandchildren-Olivia and Izabel Nettey; Morgan and Lucas; Zoe and Isaac.
Carol is predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Shirley Thumann (Leonard) and Marijayne Prindle (Douglas).
A memorial service will be held at Sunrise on Old Meridian, 12130 Old Meridian, Carmel, IN, 46032 on May 3, 2014 at 3:30 p.m.
