Carol Marie (Carnahan) Rice

December 19, 1930 — October 25, 2021

Carol Marie Rice, 90, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2021 with her husband James L. Rice, Jr. by her side. They had been married for 67 years.

Carol was born in Michigan City, IN to Paul M. and Mabel B. Carnahan. In 1948, she moved to Des Moines, IA and meet the love of her life, Jim, in band class. She graduated from Drake University in 1952 and taught short hand and typing in Pella, IA. Carol and Jim were married in 1954 and they lived in Rolla, MO; Iowa City, IA; Warren, OH; Oklahoma City, OK; and settled in Indianapolis in 1973.

Carol was a member and a Receptionist at Second Presbyterian Church for many years. She was also active in the Presbyterian Women organization and in the North Group of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Association.

Carol enjoyed spending time surrounded by her family and friends. She was well-known for her yeast rolls, cookies, and Christmas hard candy.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her uncle, Col. Hugh Carnahan; and her grandson, David Nelson.

Carol is survived by her husband, James L. Rice, Jr.; her sister, Marjorie Wade of Nashville, TN; daughters, Jean (Alan) Nelson and Mary (Robert) Agnew; son, Robert (Jan) Rice; grandchildren, Sherri (Steve) Collison, Allyssa (Chris) Janitz, Kelli (Eric) Breiner, Mark (Gabrielle) Nelson, Nicole (Dominic) Ledwith, Kathleen (Andrew) Romans, Tucker Rice, Parker Rice and Jordan Rice; and great-grandchildren, Emma Janitz, Leland Collison, Aiden Janitz, and Miren Collison.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on November 19th at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Second Presbyterian Church .
