Cecilia Rose (Weinberg) Nahmias passed away on April 28, 2021 having bid farewell to her loving children and grandchildren in the days prior. “Cecile,” as she was known to friends, was born on March 11, 1923 in Springfield, MA to parents Herman and Sarah Leah (Cohen) Weinberg. In 1944, while he was stationed at Westover Field during World War II, Cecile married the love of her life, Morris P. “Moe” Nahmias of Indianapolis. Their adventure began on the southside of Indianapolis and to that union, three amazing children were born: Nancy D. Thompson, Scott A. Nahmias, and Paul R. (Sarah) Nahmias, D.D.S. She is survived by six grandchildren, Leslie Thompson (Ben) Pecar, Gregory (Lani) Thompson, Leah Nahmias, Emily Nahmias (Adam) Brown, David Nahmias, and Michael Nahmias; and six great-grandchildren, Logan and Reagan Thompson, Jordan Pecar, and Benson, Cohen and Ari Brown. Moe preceded her in death on January 29, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Styra Tucker and Barbara Rubin.
Like many women of her generation, Cecile was a homemaker, delighting in the roles of wife, mother and grandmother. Cecile was a member of Etz Chaim Sephardic Congregation in Indianapolis and was active in the Deborah Sisterhood with whom she spent many hours baking for special events. She volunteered at Riley Hospital for Children where she loved rocking the tiny babies. Cecile also volunteered for the American Heart Association, was a scout den mother, and assumed many roles as a room mother in her children’s elementary classrooms.
Cecile never stopped blushing at Moe’s teasing, and he in turn praised her “bendichas manos” (“blessed hands”) that mastered the art of chicken soup and Sephardic specialties. She was a wonderful grandmother, never missing a performance, ball game, or life cycle event. She will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews to whom her home was always open and welcoming. Cecile was loyal, kind, beautiful and timeless. Even at 98, she never complained, saying, “it’s okay, I feel fine.” The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Marquette Manor and IU Saxony Hospital for their loving care and dedication to her comfort.
Arrangements for Cecile Nahmias funeral are under the direction of Aaron Ruben Nelson Funeral Home of Zionsville, and interment will be at the Etz Chaim Cemetery. Private graveside services will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at 10:30 AM. Due to Covid restrictions, there will not be public sitting of shiva.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Cecile may do so by making a contribution to the Etz Chaim Congregation, Riley’s Children’s Hospital, the Employee Fund at Marquette Manor, or their favorite charity in her name and by being joyful and kind.
May her memory be for a blessing.
