Charles Eugene Jackson

August 18, 1923 — December 30, 2012

Dr. Charles Eugene (Gene) Jackson
89, of Carmel IN, died peacefully on December 30, 2012 at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. He was born August 18, 1923 in Bluffton IN to the late Charles S. and Lois Kyle Jackson. A 1941 graduate of Bluffton HS, he earned an AB degree in chemistry (Phi Beta Kappa) at Indiana University in 1944 and graduated with MD from IU School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha) in 1946.

He married Norma Lea Wampler during his medical internship at Scott & White Clinic Hospital in Temple TX on January 23, 1947. He became a Major in the Army Reserves and was stationed at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington DC in 1947-49. He completed postgraduate training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans LA and became staff internist at Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Bluffton IN in 1951. While there, he designed the new research building and became Director of Research at the Caylor-Nickel Research Foundation.

In 1970, he moved his family to Grosse Pointe Shores MI and was recruited to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit by Dr. Boy Frame, Head, Fifth Medical Division. He later became Head of the Third Medical Division and Chief of the Clinical Genetics Division. He retired from seeing patients at age 70, but continued his genetic research. He had continuous research support from the National Institutes of Health for more than 32 years and served on several NIH Study Sections. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and received the Michigan Chapter ACP Laureate Award in 1996; and was a longtime member of the American Society of Human Genetics, Central Society for Clinical Research, American Federation for Clinical Research, and The Endocrine Society.

He had very broad research interests including muscular dystrophies, amyloidosis, albinism, phenylketonuria, Alzheimer's disease, hereditary hyperparathyroidism, pancreatitis, and multiple endocrine neoplasias and described Jackson-Weiss syndrome, a hereditary birth defect in 1976, and later localized the gene for the condition. He was an "old school" clinical geneticist/field worker (and expert phlebotomist of course) with over 60 years of close work with the Amish in IN and MI and was internationally known for his research. He was a research associate with the Human Genome Center at University of Michigan in the 1990s.

He was one of few Americans awarded Commendore to the Republic of San Marino Equestrian Order of Sant Agata in 1985 for his work there on hereditary gastric cancer. He was awarded the HFH Distinguished Career Award in 1997. He was selected for the Bluffton HS Hall of Fame in 2000. He retired to Temple TX in 2001, but continued his genetics research, publishing over 16 additional medical articles as a volunteer consultant at Scott & White Clinic where he had first started in medical training. He had over 216 peer-reviewed medical articles published during his career.
He was very happy to move back home to IN in February 2012 (as a native Hoosier) and was lovingly cared for at Clare Bridge of Carmel; it was a big relief for him to be just 8 miles from Jeff and Laurie in Fishers for those last 10 months.

He was a much beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather ("Papa"), and great grandfather and lived a life of service to his family and as primary physician for his many patients over the years and valued teacher and colleague professionally. He was the first of three generations of Eagle Scouts, Philmont Scout Ranch trekkers, and physicians. He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and participated in the Yokefellow Movement in IN in the 1950s and '60s and the Walk to Emmaus in central TX in the 1990s. He supported medical missions work and served a month at Tenwek Hospital in northwest Kenya in 1981-82. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and make others laugh and enjoyed reading, tennis, sailing, and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Norma Lea W. Jackson in 2006, and by his 2 daughters, Penny L. Stover (husband Charles) of Georgetown TX and Janice A. Byrd (husband Tim) of Townsend TN. He is survived by his son, Dr. Jeffrey A. Jackson (wife Laurie) of Fishers IN, a brother, Richard H. Jackson of Palm Harbor FL, a sister, Dorothy Lubbes of Ft. Wayne IN, a granddaughter, Meghann Byrd Erhart (husband Michael) of Maryville TN, two grandsons, Dr. Ian A. Jackson (wife Laura) of Ft. Worth TX and Dr. Kyle J. Jackson (wife Carolyn) of Winston-Salem NC, and two great granddaughters, Annalise and Alison Erhart of Maryville TN.

Memorial services will be Sunday, January 20 1:30 PM at First United Methodist Church in Temple TX and in the spring at Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church Memorial Garden, Grosse Pointe Farms MI.
