Clara Cohen (née Lichtman), 96, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2022, at Life’s Journey Hospice of Avon. Born on December 25, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Morris and Blanche (Rothschild) Lichtman, Clara grew up in East Chicago, Indiana, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School as valedictorian of her class. While attending Purdue University to study bacteriology she met Samuel R. Cohen of Indianapolis, and the couple married in 1946. They resided in the Indianapolis area for 75 years.
During that time, Clara found time to lend her services to social and religious organizations while raising her three children. She was a life member of Hadassah and the Temple Sisterhood of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. In recent decades she was a member of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Carmel.
Beloved for her kindness, wisdom, and gentle humor, Clara was a constant beacon of strength and support to her family. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Samuel; sister, Elsie Roth Mellick; and brother, Robert Lichtman. She is survived by her children, Denise (William) Topaz, Janet (Bruce) Jenkins, and Howard (Darla) Cohen; seven grandchildren; and eight great-granddaughters.
Funeral arrangements are made by Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Funeral Home, with services held graveside on Thursday, September 29, 11:30 am, at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation North Cemetery, 1300 East 161st Street, Westfield, IN 46074.
Shiva will be on Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 1-8pm with a minyon at 6:30 PM at 225 N. New Jersey Street, Unit 21, and again on Saturday, October 2, 2022 with a 6:30 PM minyon.
