Clarence Edward MacTaggart, 87, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away September 20, 2023. He was born in Oelwein, Iowa to the late Willoughby and Florance MacTaggart on April 29, 1936. He grew up on a farm outside Strawberry Point, Iowa, surrounded by seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by a sister, Mary Garrett, of Boise, Idaho and twin brothers, Earl, of Littleton, Colorado, and Verl, of Burlington, Kansas.
Clarence graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1954 and, shortly thereafter, was swept up in the last polio epidemic, after which he was no longer able to walk on his own without crutches and leg braces. He received polio treatment and rehabilitation at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
Clarence worked as a linotype operator at several printing companies, moving his family to Rochelle, Illinois in 1963, where he worked for several years at Hub Printing. He later started his own printing business in Rochelle, Scotch Printing, which was later renamed Printing, Etc. Clarence resided in Rochelle until 2021, then lived briefly at assisted living facilities in Rochelle, Dekalb, and Sycamore, Illinois, before moving to the Barrington of Carmel skilled nursing facility in Carmel, Indiana, in May 2023.
Clarence is survived by his sons, David (Constance), Chris (Barbara), James, Tom (Julie), and nine grandchildren: Melissa, Eric (Dana), Bruce (Jenna), Adam (Laurene), Kevin, Shannon (Fanio), Sarah, Ashley, and Justin. Clarence also had three great-grandchildren: Petra, Rory, and Robin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Jean Ann (Ohl) MacTaggart, and son, Scott.
A private memorial service will be held in Strawberry Point, Iowa, at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association .
