Clinton Keat Butler was born the youngest of five children to Asael John Alva Butler and Effie Frances Derricott on Aug. 30, 1942, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada.
Clint grew up on a ranch, just outside the very small town of Hill Spring, Alberta, Canada. He attended school in Hill Spring up through part of his high school years, at which point he transferred to High School in Cardston where he finished up. He played basketball, was socially very active and was an avid scout, earning the rank of Queen Scout, the equivalent of Eagle Scout in the U.S. Because of his outstanding achievements in scouting, he was one of only a very few from Alberta selected to attend the Valley Forge Scout Jamboree in Pennsylvania in the 1950’s. Family activities included many camping and fishing trips into the Rocky Mountains.
Following high school, Clint briefly attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton and then transferred to Brigham Young University where, he earned a BA and Master’s degree in French. He then attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he completed work for a PhD in French Language and Literature.
From 1961-1963, Clint served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Paris, France. While in Paris, he met Christine Ellan Kent, who he would later marry in the Salt Lake Temple in 1965 after his return to BYU.
Clint was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in a number of different church capacities.
In 1972, Clint and family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where he worked as a Professor of French at Indiana University at Fort Wayne. He also owned a travel agency, Europa International Travel Service, where he made travel arrangements and took tour groups to Europe. Following that he worked in International Marketing at Magnavox.
In 2018, Clint suffered a significant stroke causing aphasia, severely limiting his ability to communicate and considerably shrinking his world. This formerly articulate, outgoing man who loved to joke, make puns, avidly compete in games, especially Rook, and read, was no longer able to do any of those things.
Clint passed from this mortal existence in Zionsville, Indiana, surrounded by family on November, 24, 2022.
Clint was proceeded in death by three of his siblings; and two of his grandchildren, Megan Christine Anderson and Jordan James Butler.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Chris; his eight children, Susan (Mark) Anderson, Mark (Chloe) Butler, Allison Parnin, Danielle (Degan) Kettles, Emily (Jason) Aase, Jordan (Rachel) Butler, Rebecca (Darin) Bowling, and Stefanie (Chase) Young; 19 grandchildren; and one brother, Sylvan (Gwen) Butler.
