David Maidenberg, son of Frank Maidenberg and Nanette Zimmerman Maidenberg, and an inspiration to his family and friends, died March 4, 2022 at the age of 72 in Indianapolis, surrounded by loved ones.
David was born in Marion, Indiana on October 21, 1949, the middle child of three. David was blessed with an adoring family who nurtured his creativity and pushed him to pursue his dreams. David graduated from Marion High School in 1968. He went on to attend Indiana University Bloomington, where he graduated with a degree in political science and met many lifelong friends. From there, he attended George Washington University, where he graduated with a Master’s in public affairs.
David had an impressive career from the start. In 1980, he was elected the fifth district chairman of the Grant County Democratic Party. In 1989, he was appointed by Governor Evan Bayh as executive director of the Indiana State Election Board, where he served for 6 years. He was then appointed by Governor Frank O’Bannon as the director of the Indiana State Ethics Commission for four years. Throughout that time, David also worked as a partner for Maidenberg Associates, a company launched by his father, Frank Maidenberg. David found his true passion in working with nonprofit agencies, specifically the Sierra Club where he was the director of the Hoosier Chapter for over seven years. David moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico after retiring with a community of close friends. There, he did volunteer work for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
David was most known by family and friends for his kind heart and easygoing nature. David had a way about him that would immediately put people at ease and have them feeling like they’d known him for a lifetime. He was an introspective thinker who enjoyed writing short stories and poetry. He loved cooking, photography, live music, and spending time with friends and family. He was also an animal lover and the generosity he showed to every living creature will always be remembered.
Surviving are David’s two daughters, both of whom adored and looked up to him; Lisa Maidenberg (Alex Rosenthal) and Dory Fier (Ryan). Also surviving are David’s older brother, Anthony Maidenberg (Jenny); and younger sister, Jill Maidenberg (Richie Thal); as well as his former wife and good friend, Patricia Furlong.
A celebration will be held to honor David’s remarkable life, on April 3rd at Capri Restaurant, 2602 Ruth Drive, Indianapolis IN 46240 from 1 – 4 PM. In the spirit of David’s generosity and passion, in lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations in David’s name to the Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter or CASA First Judicial District .
