Donald Eugene Orem

September 2, 1930 — February 17, 2019

Donald Eugene Orem was born on September 2, 1930 in Dayton, OH to Julian and Nell (nee Forgy) Orem. He was the oldest of three sons, David (d. 2015), Tom. Don grew up as an Army brat living across the U.S. until his family settled in Richmond, Indiana where he graduated from Richmond High School.

Don enlisted in the Air Force, was stationed in Amarillo, TX and subsequently served in England until his discharge. He received a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, attained his P.E. and went on to receive two patents for his work at Ransburg where he worked for 25 years. He also worked for Delco Electronics for the last 10+ years of his career.

A true engineer, he was methodical about everything and loved any project that involved using his tools. He enjoyed Arnie's, spaghetti with meatballs, scotch on the rocks and coffee ice cream. Teetering between being a health nut and a hypochondriac, Don kept the vitamin companies in business, jogged, played tennis and made his own yogurt in the 70's and 80's. He was an avid reader of history and business and enjoyed a good chuckle watching Seinfeld and Raymond (over and over). The family relied on his genealogical curiosity and amateur photography skills to document the family's past and present.

Don as a devoted and loving husband, provider and friend to his high school sweet-heart and wife of 68 years. He was also a dedicated and fun-loving Dad who helped with homework, taught his children to drive, took them to the pool to give their mother a break and rode roller coasters as much as they wanted. He left his family so many good memories to relish.

During retirement, ‘mystery trips' were a favorite activity with the Kokomo group as well as several European vacations enjoyed with both friends and family. Grandchildren were a huge part of his life that turned a logical father into a giddy, cushion-fort-building grandpa who adored his new role.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (nee Wisniewski); daughters, Sandy (Tom) Reifeis and Nancy (Robert) Thompson; along with two grandchildren, Cassie and Carter Reifeis.

A Celebration of Don's life will be held on Saturday, February 23 from 1:00-3:30 p.m., at The Reserve at Hamilton Trace 9974 Federalist Dr., Fishers, IN. Casual dress - please bring photos and your wonderful memories of Don to share.
