Dorothy Cougill Chester, of Indianapolis, died peacefully Friday, May 19, 2017. She was 89 years old. Dorothy was born April 2, 1928 in Marion, Indiana, the daughter of Robert and Helen Cougill. She grew up in Marion and then left for Philadelphia with her husband, Alden Parker Chester, Jr "Mike", as he attended graduate school. As Mike would often say, Dorothy flirted with me initially, but I courted her for 67 years. They had a very special loving relationship that lasted up until the day Dorothy passed.
Dorothy attended Depauw University where she was a member of the Alpha Phil sorority. She graduated from Indiana University with a degree in education. During their married life, they lived in the Midwest; Saratoga, California; Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts; and ultimately purchased a bed and breakfast in Bar Harbor, Maine where they continued to pursue their love of cooking, entertainment and travel. After five years, they escaped the cold and relocated to Sarasota, Florida. In 1997, they returned to Indianapolis to be with their children and grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her husband; her children, Andy (Pattie) Chester of Carmel, IN, Meg (Keith) Long of West Palm Beach, FL, and Hap (Ruth) Chester of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Melissa (Thomas) Key, Emily Chester, Dan Chester, Kelly Csiszar and Patrick Chester; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Sam and Alex Key.
Dorothy was full of life, a delightful and generous hostess and parent, and she adored her family as she was adored by them.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
