Dorothy Elaine Mathis Howell (Mrs. Dillard W. "Dixie" Howell),
age 92, passed away peacefully from this earth to her eternity on Sunday, November 1, 2015. Dorothy was born in Harvel, Illinois to Elmer Leslie Mathis and Gladys Goldie Skinner Mathis on October 4, 1923. She was educated in schools in Illinois and Missouri and married the love of her life, Dillard William "Dixie" Howell, on June 9, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia. Dorothy was employed with the 6th Service Command (Manhattan Services Project) and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation in Springfield, Illinois prior to resigning to raise a family of three children, 2 sons and 1 daughter. Dorothy and her family resided in 13 states during her husband's career with the FBI and Eli Lilly and Company. Throughout each of the moves, she skillfully set up the Howell household, managed the education needs of the children, and reached out to their new community through her volunteer work with the family's local church and with many charities and community organizations. As a resident of Indianapolis for more than 45 years, she was active as a volunteer for the Indianapolis Museum of Art and was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. For the past two years, Dorothy was a resident at the Clearvista Lake Health Center, and it was through their kindness last year that one of Dorothy's fondest wishes came true when she was hosted at a private gallery tour by the famous Indiana artist, Nancy Noel. Dorothy will be dearly missed by her family, the staff and her dear friends at Clearvista Lake Health Center, and by her private caregiver and friend, Becky Foltz.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister, and two sons, Dillard W. "Buz" Howell and Jeffrey Bryan Howell. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Susan Howell Kallinger (Frank) of Indianapolis, three granddaughters Julie Anderson (Scott) of Florida, Brooke Martin (Ricardo) of Indianapolis, and Abbey Howell of Florida, and one great grandson, Charles W. "Charlie" Anderson (Julie and Scott Anderson) of Florida. She is also survived by a sister, Carol Martinson of Wisconsin.
Dorothy will be remembered and celebrated by family members at private graveside rites to be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis, Indiana. The Rev. Dr. Linda McCoy will officiate at the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Goodwill Industries of Indianapolis, Gleaners Food Bank of Indianapolis, Salvation Army of Indianapolis, Gennesaret Free Clinic of Indianapolis, Coburn Place of Indianapolis or the American Heart Association, Indianapolis Chapter.
