Douglas "Doug" Alan Rice

September 20, 1953 — July 25, 2020

Zionsville

Douglas (Doug) Alan Rice,

66, of Zionsville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 25, 2020 of complications from melanoma. He was born on September 20, 1953 in Independence, Missouri to Eugene and Lois Rice.

Doug graduated from Truman High School in Independence, MO and University of Missouri-Columbia with a BA in Biology. He earned a PhD in Biophysics from University of Chicago, and completed postdoctoral fellowships in molecular immunology at MIT and Duke University. Doug spent several years as a research scientist in agricultural biotechnology at Ciba-Geigy in North Carolina and Dupont Pioneer in Iowa, and then used his expertise to serve as a biotechnology consultant.

Doug felt his greatest accomplishment was his role as stay-at-home dad while his three children were young.  He was able to pursue his lifelong hobbies of terrific cooking and woodworking — creating furniture, kitchen cabinetry, and even violins for him and his children to play together. Traveling created many family memories, including snorkeling in Hawaii and hiking in Colorado.

He also loved the three times he rode his bicycle across Iowa as part of RAGBRAI, including once with his daughter, and shared this passion with all of his children. At home, Doug adored spending time with the five Golden Retrievers he had throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Susan Jayne; sons, Evan and Brian; daughter, Annie; mother, Lois; brother, Rick (Anne); sister-in-law, Nancy (Phil) Winn; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

There will be no services.  Memorial contributions may be made to land conservation trusts via www.landtrustalliance.org .

His family would like to thank the friends, neighbors, and medical teams that provided support and care during Doug’s illness.
