Dr. Melvin Robert Lund

October 17, 1922 — October 3, 2024

Zionsville

Dr. Melvin Robert Lund, a cherished dentist, educator, and veteran, passed away on October 3, 2024, in Zionsville, Indiana. He was born on October 17, 1922, in Siren, Wisconsin, a proud Midwesterner who dedicated his life to serving his community and profession.

Dr. Lund earned his Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree and subsequently had a rewarding career as a dentist. He not only practiced his passion but also shared his knowledge and expertise as a professor at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. Dr. Melvin Lund was recruited to Indiana University School of Dentistry from Loma Linda in approximately 1971 to chair the Operative Dentistry Department and also to direct the Operative Dentistry MSD graduate program. He held these positions until he reached university retirement age.

Although retired from his full-time faculty position, Dr. Lund continued to be active in academic life, teaching two days a week at IUSD until his early 90s. He continued to provide one or two lectures for D3 students as well as clinical supervision in Grad Operative for many years as part-time volunteer faculty. He had a profoundly positive impact on several generations of dentists at Loma Linda and Indiana University and oversaw and influenced over 200 IUSD MSD students who practice and hold academic appointments around the world.

His commitment to dentistry was matched by his dedication to continuing education, as he ardently participated in various professional gatherings, including nearly every Academy of Operative Dentistry meeting held during the Midwinter meeting in Chicago. His unwavering presence at the Indiana District Dental Society general membership meetings was often met with a standing ovation, honoring him as the oldest American Dental Association member in attendance.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Lund served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, a testament to his character and dedication to his country. Beyond his career and military service, he was a man of many interests. He found joy in golfing, tending to his garden, attending church services, and mowing his lawn with his tractor. One of Dr. Lund's, or Pug as he was known by those closest to him, greatest pleasures was traveling the world with his wife, Margaret.

Dr. Lund was married for an impressive 70 years, a testament to his and Margaret's enduring love and partnership. Together, they nurtured a family that includes their son, Dr. Mark (Debbie) Lund, and daughters Kristine Lund Brandt and Kelly Lund (Brad) Grant. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and adored great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren, who will carry his legacy forward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Emelia Lund, and his devoted wife, Margaret. Melvin Robert Lund will be remembered not only for his contributions to dentistry but also for the warmth and kindness he extended to all who knew him. His legacy of service, compassion, and love for his family will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
