Edwin Wilson Brown, Jr., M.D.
"Uncle Bus", 89, went to be with his Lord while in a beautiful and comfortable hospice center in Indianapolis at approximately 3:20 PM, Saturday, May 23rd. In the few days prior to his death, he enjoyed several very meaningful visits including one from members of his church choir who sang some of his favorite songs and who listened as Ed told one of the many fascinating stories of his life.
Dr. Brown was a retired physician and Indiana University professor living in Indianapolis. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia; and their three children, Edwin Wilson III, John Currier, and Wende Patricia (Camp). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Matthew Brown, Elizabeth Minks, and Andy Brown as well as Kiersten Baughman, Kayla Camp, and Stephen Camp; one great-grandchild, Evelyn Baughman; and brothers, Richard Brown and Paul Dinsmore Brown.He was preceded in death by his brother, David Brown.
Ed Brown was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1926. He was educated at Carnegie Institute of Technology (1943), Amherst College (1943-44), Houghton College (1946-47), and earned his M.D. at Harvard University (1953). During his working career, Dr. Brown held numerous important posts in education and in public health in the United States and around the world. Some of his most notable experiences include: Harvard Epidemiological Project, Egedesminde, Greenland (1956-57); Visiting Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine, Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, India (1961-63); Associate Medical Director, People to People Health Foundation, Washington, D.C. (1965-66); Sr. Medical Advisor, King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia (1977-78); and Associate Professor of Medicine, Indiana University (1966-85).
Dr. Brown was a military veteran honored in the Indiana War Memorial. He also served under U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson heading up Project Vietnam War as part of Project HOPE, recruiting volunteer doctors to care for civilians during the War. He was an active member of Rotary International and served on the Board of many Christian organizations.
Ed Brown was a long-time member of East 91st Street Christian Church and, more recently, was a founding charter member of Legacy Bible Church. He was very active in Christian Missions, particularly in Eastern Europe.
Dr. Brown loved to read C.S. Lewis and became a world renowned expert on his works. A British publication referred to Ed's collection as the largest known private library of C.S. Lewis first editions. Those books are now at Taylor University where his daughter, Wende, attended college. In 2007, Ed wrote "In Pursuit of C.S. Lewis: Adventures in Collecting His Works" and his own autobiography, "Around the World in Eighty Years...with nothing by chance", both published by Proleptikos Press.
A Celebration of Ed Brown's life will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Rd, at 11 AM. Calling will be from 9 to 10:30 AM.
