Eleanor Shafer Young,
89, of Indianapolis and formerly Beavercreek, OH, passed away November 11, 2015. Eleanor was born on December 18, 1925 in Bluffton, IN, to the late Ottis E. and Edna E. (Schakel) Shafer.
She was married for 65 years to Colonel Jacques Edward Young, who preceded her in death on March 4, 2015. Eleanor was the loving mother of Deborah Rasper (Alan) and Kurt Edward Young (Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Solomon) and grandmother of Alison Marie Rasper.
Eleanor was a graduate of Bluffton High School, Indiana. She attended Purdue University and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry (1947). While at Purdue she met Jacques through his sister and her roommate, Virginia "Ginny" Young. Her first position with DuPont in Virginia was working as an analytical chemist in the Rayon Department. Returning to Indiana for marriage, she moved to Ohio with Jacques. Her career as an educator began in secondary education with the Beavercreek School System and continued with the Dayton Board of Education as a math specialist in Adult Basic Education.
Eleanor earned a Master of Education from Miami University (1963) and a Doctor of Education from the University of Cincinnati (1983). She served as a faculty member and administrator at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, OH, for more than 25 years, attaining Professor Emeritus in 1999. Her primary interest was helping students learn and designing curriculum to increase student success. She developed two student-centered curriculum publications, authoring Preview for Algebra and co-authoring Mathematics in Review, both long-time department adoptions at Sinclair Community College.
Eleanor was involved in a variety of community activities including service with the Beavercreek Board of Zoning Appeals including multiple terms as chair, long-time member of Delta Kappa Gamma, active supporter of Hawker United Church of Christ in Beavercreek, OH, and volunteer at Point Betsie Lighthouse when summering at their home on Crystal Lake in Beulah, MI.
While living at Brookdale of Castleton, she enjoyed gardening and was proud to be named the "gardener of the month" for May earlier this year. She was teaching others to the end but instead of solving mathematical problems, she focused on solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
A memorial service will be held at Ft. Myers Chapel with burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
