In remembrance of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Elita Berzins.
Elita (Krasts) Berzins was born in Auce, Latvia in 1930, and passed away on March 9, 2021, at the age of 90, in Carmel, Indiana. Elita spent her early childhood in Jelgava, Latvia. Due to the Soviet-Russian Red Army invasion of Latvia and the communist oppression and terror that followed, she and her family were forced to flee to Lubeck, Germany. During her time in Germany, she met her future husband, Ojars Berzins. After immigrating to the United States in 1958, they married and settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, where they raised three children, Ojars, Ilze and Andris.
Elita was active in the Latvian community and a member of the Latvian Lutheran Church, the Latvian Welfare Association Daugavas Vanagi, and the Latvian Community Center Women's Auxilliary. She was a frequent visitor of the Latvian Center Garezers, in Three Rivers, Michigan and was very proud that all three of her children and four grandchildren attended and graduated from the Garezers Latvian High School. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with family, friends, reading and tending to her garden.
Elita was preceded in death by her father and mother, Edgar and Zelma (Rumba) Krasts; as well as her husband, Ojars Berzins; and stepmother, Fanija Krasts. She leaves behind her brother, Edgars Krasts; two sons, Ojars Berzins and his wife Julie, and Andris Berzins and his wife Ina; daughter, Ilze Miller; grandchildren, Margrieta Myers and her husband Nathan, Ojars Berzins, Sarma (Miller) Mehboob, Liene Miller and Greta Cepas; and three great grandchildren, Ryder and Hazel Myers, and Zaira Mehboob.
A memorial service for Elita will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, we kindly request donations be made to the Latvian Center Garezers, 57732 Lone Tree Rd, Three Rivers, MI 49093.
