Esther Lillian Klapper, 97, passed away on December 27, 2013. Esther was born on April 26, 1916, to the late Jacob and Minnie Roth. Esther was a twin whose twin sister, Ethel, preceded her in death in 1929. Esther was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis. She had planned to attend Butler University after being awarded a musical scholarship, however, the Great Depression and economic conditions at the time caused her to rethink her college plans.
She helped her father as a cashier in his grocery business called Roth's Grocery, which was located in Broad Ripple. It was during this time that she fell in love with a frequent customer and her future husband, Rudolph (Rudy) Klapper, who had opened a package liquor store also in Broad Ripple. For the next 50 years before she retired, she juggled raising five children while working with and supporting her husband in his business interests. Esther enjoyed reading and playing Mah Jongg with her friends.
Esther was a member of Beth-El Zedeck Congregation prior to becoming a member of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation.
She was preceded in her passing by her late husband, Rudy Klapper; and her granddaughters, Risha Nurell and Julia Ratzman. Esther is survived by her children, Marlene (Lowell) Wohlfeld, Richard (Margery) Klapper, Gerald (Beverly) Klapper, Sheila Klapper Barrett, David (Betty) Klapper; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to send special thanks of gratitude to Esther's caregivers, Patty Bostic and Susan Pearson, for all the care, love and attention given by them throughout the years.
Graveside services will be held December 31, 2013 at 2 PM in the Beth-El Zedeck North Cemetery. A minyan will be held that evening at 5 PM at Gerald and Beverly Klapper's residence and shiva will be that evening and the following evening until 9 PM.
