Our beloved mother, Farrell Jean McCown Floreancig, began her next journey on April 13, 2023 after 90 years of a life well lived. Born in Indianapolis on July 31, 1932, she was the only child of Elmer “Mac” McCown and Mildred Woods McCown. She will be remembered for her unwavering kindness to all, fierce devotion to her family, her smile, her inner and outer beauty, and the ability to touch the heart of anyone lucky enough to come within her orbit. She was loved by all who had the honor of knowing her.
Although her childhood was complicated, at a young age, mom fell in love with music excelling at the performing arts as an accomplished singer and pianist. Music became her gateway to happiness. The lyrics of her life told a story of a bold and mighty woman, who despite her petite stature, towered over all with her compassion, strength and love of life. The song of mom’s life was written in notes of love, kindness and empathy for both human beings and animals. She was a graduate of Decatur Central HS where her love for music flourished.
Upon becoming a young woman, in 1955 she married and created a melody of her own in the form of her five devoted daughters. Her life revolved around “the girls” doing everything and anything to teach them strength, character, wisdom, and the understanding of the human condition. No matter what life threw her way, her gratitude for life never wavered. As the years went on, the sky opened up and the sun began to shine. She spent 16 years working at Butler University, as the administrative assistant to the Dean of Liberal Arts, David Silver, giving her daughter's the gift of an invaluable education. It was also when she started to see the world with at least one of her girls by her side. Time spent in New England, Michigan, Chicago, New York, the Southwest and Europe were all cherished memories. In between traveling, one by one, her precious six grandchildren and four great grandchildren came into the world. Her heart was so full of love, happiness, and pride watching them grow into the incredible human beings they have become. She adored them all.
An avid reader, mom was a history buff and loved everything England and Ireland. She would never hesitate to say “it’s because I’m Irish” when asked why she did something. It was her badge of honor. She was also a self-proclaimed “news freak” reading the NYT and watching MSNBC every day. Mom was not shy about her political leaning. She loved life, but as a bleeding-heart liberal, she loathed all the injustices committed against people of color, women's rights and the LGBTQ community in this country. Although she was overjoyed to be alive to see the first black president, November 8, 2016 was the worst day of her life politically. She loved America and often quoted Emma Lazarus, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” which seemed to have faded during that unfortunate time in American history. She was forever grateful when good finally overcame evil.
Although the last four years of mom’s life were hard physically, she never gave up. She would always say, “how lucky am I”. She was not going to leave this earth until she was ready and that’s exactly what she did. She spoke many times about her next journey and was looking forward to it. She would always say when she was watching her cherished birds outside her window, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches over me.”
Not a day will go by that Mom, Meemee, Grandmother, or Mom Mom, will not be truly missed. The love for her is unending. The world has lost an angel that walked this earth and it will never be same, however, we know she is watching over us and find comfort in knowing she is by our side, always.
We would like to thank the staff of Wyndmoor at Castleton and Community Hospital North for the care our mother received over the past two years. She was always so grateful at the kindness they showed her and the care she received.
Mom is survived by her loving daughters, Gina Woods, Lisa Floreancig (Bart), Staci Menozzi,(Jim) Candi Floreancig, Julie Floreancig and her son and best friend Scott Hunt; her grandchildren Andrew Davis, Benjamin Floreancig,(Ashley) Noah, Max & Chloe Rahimzadeh, and Henry Menozzi; and her great-grandchildren Christopher & Cecilia Jean Floreancig, and Madelyn & Luka Davis.
At mom’s request, there will be no funeral services. Donations can be made, in her honor, to Indy Humane , Planned Parenthood or the ACLU .
