George William Morris

George William Morris, Jr.
91, of Indianapolis died March 21, 2015 of cardiac failure. He was born November 2, 1923 in Bloomington, Indiana to George William Morris, Sr. and Amy Morris.

He graduated from IPS School #70 and Arsenal Technical High School. He attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. George interrupted his studies to enlist in the United States Army, where he graduated from Officers' Candidate School with the rank of Second Lieutenant. He served overseas during World War II, and after the war in the Military Police in Munich, Germany. George was honorably discharged from the Army as a First Lieutenant in the Infantry.

Before being deployed, he married his college sweetheart, Barbara Lee Smith, who survives him. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on January 11, just before driving to Ft. Myers Beach for their annual vacation. George is also survived by his two daughters, Sally (Roy) Byer and Patty (Mark) Eble; grandchildren, John Byer, Scott (Stephanie) Evard, and Lizzie Evard; step-grandchildren, Alex Eble, Alyssa Eble and Marianna Eble; and former son-in-law, Dan Evard who continues to operate the Morris Printing Company, which was started by George's great-grandfather in 1877 and run by George and his brothers, Fred and Bill, following World War II until their retirements. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, as well as nephews, Fred F Morris and Daniel Neil Morris.

George was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church since 1956 and served in many capacities there, including Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session, and the Board of Trustees as Secretary, Vice-President and President.

He was a gentle, optimistic man who was fond of working in his garden and creating safe havens for God's creatures. In his retirement, George enjoyed traveling and spending time with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at A.R.N. Funeral & Cremation Services, 11411 N. Michigan Rd., on Monday, March 30th at 4 PM with visitation from 3 PM. Interment will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army or to the charity of the donor's choice.
