Gerald E. “Bud” Smith,
age 87, of Westfield, passed away Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019. A 1950 graduate of Washington High School, Gerald was a lifelong resident of the Indianapolis area, living in Speedway, Carmel, and Westfield. He joined the Air Force in 1950, and served during the Korean War, attaining the rank of staff sergeant as an aviation maintenance crew chief, (F-86 fighters). He married the love of his life, Irene Rejko, in 1953 while in the armed services, a woman he had known since the third grade.
He was a member of the varsity baseball team at Washington High, and he attended Butler University following military service. He found his niche selling in the insurance industry, working for State Farm Insurance as an agent for over 34 years. He was a leading performer in all lines for State Farm winning many accolades over his career with the company.
A lifetime outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially golf. He was a member of Ulen Country Club for many years, and scored two holes-in-one during his lifetime.
Gerald was defined by his work ethic, generosity, ability to make us laugh and his love of family. Above all he valued his faith and was especially proud of his three grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene; his sons, Brett (Kimberly) and James (Janet); three grandsons, Bradford (Kristen), David (Jordan), and Michael; and his great-granddaughter, Rowan. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Smith (Sandy); and sisters, Patricia Yount, Trudy (Bob) Bernath, and Donna (Gus) Perrin.
Services for Gerald will be 2 -3 pm, Saturday, November 2nd, 2019 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 1402 West Main St., Carmel, IN 46032.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until time of service Saturday, and a reception will follow the service.
