It is with heavy hearts that Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority mourns the loss of sister and volunteer, Harriett Block Macht. We were notified of Harriett's passing early morning on March 7, 2013.
Harriet was born on April 27, 1927 and became a founding sister of Delta Phi Epsilon at the Delta Delta Chapter at Indiana University in 1948, where she studied music and opera. After graduation, she settled down in the Miami, Fl. area and became a member of the Greater Miami Alumnae Association.
She then served as the first Delta Phi Epsilon National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Chairman during the NPC's 100th biennium, from 1991-1993. Prior to that prestigious honor, she began serving the NPC in 1988 as secretary and then treasurer.
When asked about her involvement with the NPC, in a 1993 TRIAD article, Harriett replied:
"I love it. I have three sons and no daughters. I believe that women need close involvement with other women. Sororities should maintain their single-sex status. It is very important. This is a wonderful time for women. The opportunities are there, and with the right motivation and education, a woman today can achieve anything."
Harriett believed in the importance of positive Panhellenic relations by strengthening the friendships within the Panhellenic community to benefit sorority advancement. She often said volunteering as the NPC Chairman was the most rewarding experience she ever had as a sister of DPhiE.
In honor of Harriett's strong belief in the NPC, Delta Phi Epsilon bestows the Harriet Block Macht Outstanding Alumnae Panhellenic of the Biennium Award to a top performing alumnae Panhellenic. This honor is given during the NPC Biennial Meeting.
She also was very passionate about her alma mater, Indiana University. Harriett established a scholarship for the music and opera program at IU in honor of her late parents.
Arrangements entrusted to Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary.
