Harvey B. Mendelson

October 22, 1928 — October 3, 2022

Indianapolis

Harvey B. Mendelson passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 3, 2022, in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He was 93.

Harvey was born in the Bronx, NY, on October 22, 1928.  He was the oldest child of Louis and Roslyn Mendelson.  He was preceded in death by his sister Renee (who married Rudy) and brother Buddy (who married Margie).  He and Buddy shared the same birthday, 5 years apart.

Throughout his life Harvey amazingly rarely took pain meds or felt physical pain, even when having dental surgeries.  He also avoided the diabetes that ran throughout his family, although he ate whatever he wanted.  He said the reason for all this was the anesthetic shot he received from a nurse at an emergency clinic at age 9.  He claimed that shot gave him “Superman blood,” and he had an affinity for Superman from then on.  Harvey will be buried in his Superman shirt.

When Harvey was 13, he was interested in a 10 year old girl in the neighborhood, and so he threw a snowball at her.  He then told her that he was going to marry her.  From that day he and Florence Yagoda were inseparable, and they married 8 years later on June 12, 1949.  Florence passed away on December 28, 2004, at 73.

Harvey and Florence had three children, Lori (Michael), Elaine (Ron), and Marlene (Mike).  His grandchildren are Rebecca (Ben), Marc (Diana), Sharon (Matt), Noah, David (Kristy), Alyssa, and Andrew.  Harvey also has great-grandchildren, Jane, Micah, and Mila.

Harvey has instructed that his life should be celebrated with a party, not mourned by sitting shiva.  He asked that no one be permitted to wear black on his behalf.  Harvey will be buried at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens in Boynton Beach, Florida, next to the love of his life.
