Helen Cohn Cowen passed away in Miami, Fl on September 18, 2016. Mrs. Cowen was born in Evansville, IN and moved to Indianapolis when she was six months old. Helen was the daughter of Abe and Eva Cohn. Abe and Eva were life long residents of Indianapolis and were founding members of United Hebrew Congregation, which later became the present day Congregation B'nai Torah.
Mrs. Cowen was involved in several community endeavors including serving as an officer on the Jewish Council of Jewish Women. Mrs. Cowen moved to Miami Beach, Florida and was actively involved in several community organizations. She served as Vice President of Mt. Sinai Medical Center Auxiliary and became the 21st Life Director of the auxiliary. Mrs. Cowen was Vice President of the Greater Miami National Council of Jewish Women, and the first adviser of the Ocean View Division of the Council of Jewish Women. She was a member of Temple Israel and its sisterhood, a life member of Mt. Sinai Auxiliary, a life member of the Council of Jewish Women and a founding member of the Women's Cancer League of Miami Beach. Mrs. Cowen was a Founder of Mt. Sinai Medical Hospital, Life member and Foster Alumnus of Brandeis University and Life Member of the Jewish Home for the Aged. Mrs. Cowen was predeceased by her husband, Edward Cowen, son, Richard Cowen, brother, David Cohn, sisters, Francis Goldman and Esther Fink.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Lenora Burgauer of Palm Beach, Florida and nieces Elaine (Frank) Safrin and Susan (Robert) Portin; nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Private graveside services will be held in Indianapolis.
