Henry "Hank" F. Cole,
77, passed away on Saturday, January 20th 2018. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Henry and Genevieve Cole on August 2, 1940. Hank graduated from Parma High School in Parma, Ohio. He entered Ohio Northern University in 1958 and completed his Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy in 1962. While at Ohio Northern, he joined Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity from which he received a Scholastic Achievement Award in 1962 and was elected Treasurer for one year. Also in 1962, Hank was further recognized by being awarded membership in the Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society in the charter year of the Beta Psi chapter at ONU. The chapter officers were installed by Dr. Louis Busse from the University of Wisconsin and then President of the National Rho Chi Society.
Hank continued his education at the Ohio State University with a Master's degree in 1964 and as a N.I.H. Fellow received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1968. He then completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Washington (Seattle) in the School of Medicine. His areas of specialization included Neuropharmacology, Psychopharmacology, and Preclinical Drug Evaluation. He was a registered Pharmacist in Ohio, Washington, and Missouri.
Dr. Cole accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, School of Pharmacy in 1969. There, he found his skill, and his love of teaching led to receiving the School of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year Award (1973-1974) and the Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honorary Society Outstanding Teacher Award (1980). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1975 and was on the faculty of the School of Nursing as well as the School of Pharmacy.
In 1989, Dr. Cole joined Butler University, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Indianapolis, Indiana to teach pharmacology, physiology and pathophysiology. Throughout his career, Dr. Cole also taught courses for continuing education programs and symposiums for health professionals, published several research and professional articles, sat on a committee aimed at preventing suffering in laboratory animals used in research, and was involved in research aimed at easing drug addiction. He maintained membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, New York Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi Research Society of North America and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Dr. Cole was elected to Professor Emeritus and retired from Butler University in 2013.
Hank grew up spending summers at the family cottage in Mentor on Lake Erie. No matter how much the shoreline changed, he observed looking north that the endless waves "always looked the same". While living in Seattle, he took up sailing, a skill he later shared with his sons. During the 1970's CB craze his handle was "Dry land sailor". Although he left Cleveland as a young adult, and cheered the local football team wherever he lived, he always maintained a soft spot for his Cleveland Browns. Hank was a very smart and caring man who will be sorely missed.
Hank is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carole P. Cole; sons, Alexander H. Cole, DVM and Andrew T. Cole (Ingrid); brother, Allan E. Cole (Jennifer); sister, Janet L. Sekerak (Ron deceased); nephews, Matthew (Laura) and Richard Cole; and niece, Beth Sekerak (Todd).
Funeral services will be held at St. Francis In-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry Street, Zionsville, IN 46077 on Saturday, February 3rd, at 2 PM.
