Hinda Riker, 87, passed away on January 22, 2022, in Indianapolis. A lifelong resident of Columbus, OH she moved to Carmel, IN to be closer to family in December 2017.
Hinda was born in Columbus on April 18, 1934, to the late Charles and Jeanette Friedman. She graduated from East High School in 1951 and enrolled in Ohio State University for two years. As a teenager, she worked, along with her siblings, in her parents’ general store, Friedman’s Department Store, on Fifth Avenue in Columbus.
Hinda was a longtime and active member of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Columbus. For over 25 years, she worked in retail at Lazarus/Macy’s department store in the jewelry department. Hinda enjoyed painting and sculpting a variety of subjects throughout her life. For many years, she was an active volunteer at Ohio State University Medical School, role playing as a patient for new students. She loved visiting with friends, traveling, and playing bridge and mah jong.
Hinda is survived by her two daughters; Jackie Smith (Robert), Ellen Riker (Paul Ehrenreich); two brothers; Alfred Friedman and Norman Friedman; her two sisters; Ireen Weinberg (Dr. Alan), Diana Routman (Richard). She has four grandchildren; Katie Smith, Ethan Smith, Elise Keels (Edward), Alison Ehrenreich (Thomas Kafalas) and 2 great-grandchildren; Raelle and Sydney Keels. Hinda is predeceased by her sister Cheri Kronenfeld and sister-in-law, Marcia Friedman.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday January 26, 2022, at Tifereth Israel Cemetery, Columbus, OH.
