Hormoz Broumand, PhD.
91, of Indianapolis, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2015 in his home. He was born on August 29, 1924 in Tehran, Iran to the late Khalil and Farangis Broumand- Nejad. Dr. Broumand traveled to the United States on July 1,1944 from Iran to attend graduate school.
Dr. Broumand had received his BS in Iran in 1944, his MS at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and PhD in 1953 in Food Chemistry at Cook College , Rutgers University. He also did a post-doctorate fellowship at Purdue University.
He worked for Continental Can Company and Nabisco. He moved to Indianapolis in 1958 to work for Stark & Wetzel as a food chemist. He started North American Laboratories in the early 1960's. He became a Fellow at the Institute of Food Technologists in 1979. In 1992, after selling North American, Dr. Broumand started Food Innovations International to develop and manufacture food seasonings, spices, and products for a variety of food manufacturers.
In 1956, Dr. Broumand married Rachel Tour also from Tehran. He was Baha'i and advocated the acceptance of his religion in Indiana.
Hormoz Broumand is lovingly remembered by Clifton and Stafford, his sons; Laura Broumand, his daughter-in-law; and William Broumand, his grandson. He is also survived by his siblings, Kacavous Broumand, Cleopatra Broumand Birrenbach and Cyrus Broumand.
The memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the Baha'i Center, 3740 West 62nd St, Indianapolis at 3 p.m.
