Carmel, Indiana--Irene Mae Smith, 89, of Carmel, passed away the morning of August 23, 2021. A lifelong Hoosier, Irene was born to the late Joseph and Irma Rejko on July 22, 1932 in Indianapolis. A 1950 graduate of George Washington High School, she worked at Eli Lilly for several years prior to her marriage to Gerald E. “Bud” Smith in 1953. The two had known each other since the third grade and spent 66 wonderful years together until his death in 2019.
Irene was from a large extended family and was devoted to her church, her children, grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. She was a skilled cook and delighted in entertaining her family at holidays and celebrations. She will always be remembered for her love of her family, her sense of humor, and for her generosity.
Irene was a member of Ulen Country Club and enjoyed playing golf with both the ladies’ groups and with her husband. She and Bud traveled extensively, and enjoyed the winter season in warmer climates for many years.
Irene is survived by her sons, Brett (Kimberly) and James Smith; three grandsons, Bradford (Kristen), David and Michael; and great-granddaughter, Rowan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Mary Ann Semich; and daughter-in-law, Janet Smith.
Services for Irene will be held at 10 am Thursday, September 16th at St. Christopher Episcopal Church, 1402 West Main Street, Carmel. The family will receive friends from 9 am until the time of service Thursday, and a reception will follow the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association .
