Isidore Mandelbaum

August 31, 1928 — December 19, 2012

Isidore Mandelbaum, M.D. 84 years of age, passed away December 19, 2012.

A man of varied interests; Iz was an avid fisherman and followed IU sports. He and his wife were antique collectors of toys and samplers and other items that may have caught their interest. He was very fond of opera and attended performances frequently.

He proudly served in the US Army, and was a graduate of New York University Medical School, class of 1952. He worked his way through medical school by forming a dance band and playing the clarinet and saxophone.

Dr. Mandelbaum joined the Indiana University Department of Surgery in 1958 practicing thoracic and vascular surgery for 37 years until retiring as a Professor in the department in 1995.

He was a member of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, American Medical Association, Indianapolis Medical Society, Society of Thoracic Surgery, and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

As a highly respected member of the community, Governor Otis Bowen, M.D. named him a Sagamore of the Wabash. He was also the former president of the Indiana University Friends of Music Society.

Iz is survived by his wife of 60 years, Germaine "Gerry" Newman Mandelbaum; sons, Dr. David M. (Anna) of Greenwood, Michael A. (Tracey) of Merino Valley, CA, Dr. Jonathan A. (Stacey) of Indianapolis, Arthur E. Mandelbaum of Fort Wayne, IN , Stuart M. (Denise) Mandelbaum of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Rise S. Cavaness of Indianapolis; sixteen grandchildren; brother, Dr. Joseph Mandelbaum of New York and sister, Estelle Pace of New York.

Funeral services will be held at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Road, on Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 2:00pm. Burial will follow in Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery North.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association of Greater Indianapolis.
