Ivy Sylvia Williams (née Humber) died peacefully in Greenwood Healthcare Center on January 29, 2018 in Greenwood, Indiana at the age of 80.
Ivy is survived by her son, Charles Lee Williams Jr; grandsons, Alexander L. Williams and Christopher L. Williams; and brother, Gerald Humber. She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Miriam Humber; brothers, Reginald, Harold, Cyril, Donald, and Ronald; and sisters, Dorothy, Ella, Elsie, Melissa, and Rose.
Ivy was born on June 8, 1937 in John's Beach, Newfoundland, Canada to Albert and Miriam Humber. She attended St. Ambrose School in Humber Arm South, Newfoundland, Canada. She regularly attended church service at St. Ambrose Anglican Church, where she also taught Sunday school.
Ivy took her first job as a waitress at The Knob in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada. She later worked as a waitress at the Glynmill Inn in Cornerbrook, and then she worked as a waitress at the Candlelight Restaurant in Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada.
While working in Stephenville, she met Charles (Chuck) Lee Williams, who served in the United States Air Force and would later become her spouse. They were married April 16, 1960 in Curling, Newfoundland, Canada.
Together, Chuck and Ivy moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. On June 27, 1963 Ivy became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Within the following year, Chuck was stationed at Zaragoza Air Base in Zaragoza, Spain and Ivy relocated to Zaragoza to be with Chuck.
While in Zaragoza, Ivy gave birth to her only son, Charles Lee Williams Jr. The family lived together in Zaragoza for just over one year before Ivy and Lee moved to Chuck's hometown, Fairmont, West Virginia for a brief period. When Chuck returned from Zaragoza, he, Ivy and Lee moved to Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska.
Shortly thereafter, Ivy and Lee then returned to Fairmont, West Virginia and developed a strong familial relationship with Albert and Julia Spatafore, who were lifelong friends of Chuck. Albert and Julia played an integral role in Ivy's relocation and acclimation to the city that would be her home for the next 25 years.
While there, she held various positions in the service industry, including waitress at the Poky Dot Restaurant. She eventually served as general manager of the Holiday House Motor Lodge for 10 years.
In 1994, Ivy relocated one final time to Indianapolis, IN to be near her son and her grandchildren. It was here that she bought her first home near Garfield Park.
Living in Indianapolis, she worked in a variety of roles with Target, Walmart, and Indianapolis Public Schools.
During her employment with Walmart, Ivy received multiple recognitions for outstanding performance, including the "4-Star Badge" award, several "Job Well Done" awards, and five consecutive "Excellent Attendance" awards. Her exemplary contributions earned her a recognition trip to the home office of Walmart in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Ivy enjoyed music, crocheting, bingo, cooking, playing games, being informed about news, and spending time with her family. Her pet cats, Abbott and Carmel, were also very important members of the family ...and some would say quite spoiled by her.
The memorial event is scheduled for February 9, 2018 at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, 11411 N. Michigan Rd., Zionsville, IN 46077. Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. with a memorial service immediately following from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
