J Harold II

At age 67, Hal peacefully passed away on February 28, 2014 in Westfield, IN. He was born February 20, 1947 in Ft. Wayne, IN to the late J Harold and Lorraine E. Smith.

Hal was a 1965 graduate of Elmhurst High School, having attained Honorable mention for basketball. He attained Eagle Scout rank and Order of the Arrow in scouting.

After high school he attended Indiana University (Bloomington) where he was a proud member of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity. Majoring in Government, he received a B.A. degree and was accepted to the I.U. School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. He graduated with a D.D.S. degree in 1973 and received the Great Lakes Society Award for his oral surgery achievements.

He applied and was chosen for a post graduate Internship/Residency in the Oral Surgery program at the I.U. Medical Center.

Following his training, he entered private practice and practiced as a partner for 20 years and in solo practice for 16 years in Indianapolis. He deeply enjoyed providing his specialty services to his many patients throughout his 35 years in practice. He retired from practice in 2011.

In 1984 he was President of both the Indianapolis District Dental Society and the Indiana State of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Society. In 1985 he was Chairman of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Practice Management Committee and wrote the AAOMS Practice Management Manual. He was a member of local, state and national dental and oral surgical societies. He was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel and on staff at St. Vincent Hospital.

During the last two years of private practice, he enjoyed providing oral surgery services (on a part-time basis) for the Indiana State Department of Corrections, serving inmates in the state prison system.

He enjoyed golf, (2 holes-in-one), playing Black Jack in Las Vegas and completing "projects" of clearing woods, landscaping, auto restoration and general repairs.

He is survived by his two daughters Jill Hinke (Olav) and Meg Jocovic (Alex), grandchildren Kora and Beck Hinke, half brother Dick Beerman (Zella), nephew Todd Beerman and Todd's mother Penny Beerman, half sister Joy Manes.

Throughout his life he was surrounded by good friends and many devoted and loyal Oral Surgery "team" members.

Special thanks to St. Vincent Hospital and his physicians: Dr. Dan Shull, Dr. Ken Ney, Dr. Dan Milton, Dr. Chris Leagre, Dr. John Morton and Dr. Dimitri Arbuck and their staffs and to his caregiver, Patricia Gill R.N., for prolonging his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 4-6 p.m. at Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary 11411 N. His one literary accomplishment was the self publishing of "The Maxims of Life". His lifelong favorite quote; "We're not here for a long time, We're here for a 'good time'". It was a 'GOOD TIME'!
