James A. “Jim” Wurster, 87, of Bonita Springs, Florida and formerly of Indianapolis, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 21, 2024. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sarajane; his brother, Russ; his sons, Steve (Deb), Michael (Laurie), and Chris Striebeck (Dee); his daughter, Stacia Petit (Thierry); 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Al; his mother, Elsa; his brothers, Don and Fred; and his son, Chris.
Born in Indiana, Jim earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University in 1959 and was a proud Phi Delta Theta fraternity member. Along with his partner, Bill Gervasio, he co-founded American Consulting Engineers in a room of his home on Grandview Drive in Indianapolis. Their hard work and dedication and a loyal, hard-working team helped the firm grow into the highly respected, multi-faceted engineering, surveying, and architectural consulting company known today as American Structurepoint. Over the past five decades, the organization expanded across several states and now employs nearly 700 professionals, some of whom worked alongside Jim and Bill for many years.
A man of many talents, Jim was a Registered Engineer in 21 states, a Licensed Architect in three, and a Registered Land Surveyor in Indiana. He also served his country from 1955 to 1963, first in the United States Navy and later in the United States Air Force Reserve. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was a Radio Operator for the 434th Troop Carrier Wing at Bakalar Air Force Base in Columbus, Indiana.
Jim deeply loved his family and friends and cherished every moment he spent with them. He enjoyed tennis, golf, snow skiing, snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, and hunting. A passionate traveler and a proud Purdue fan, especially when it came to basketball and football—he also enjoyed playing poker, listening to country music, and attending Broadway shows and symphony performances with Sarajane, friends, and family.
Above all, Jim was devoted to serving his community in Indianapolis and Bonita Springs. He found his most significant purpose in his faith and was a dedicated follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. His legacy of love, service, and unwavering commitment to both family and profession will be long remembered and deeply missed.
