James "Jim" Edward Devine Sr., 87, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away, with both of his daughters by his side, on October 1, 2019. Jim was born in the Bronx on March 14, 1932. He was raised in the Bronx and graduated from Pope Pius High School. In 1956, Jim married Kathleen M. Sweeney, and a year later they moved to New City, New York where they raised their five children, 3 boys and 2 girls.
He was a long time NYC shipping guy with a career that spanned more than 40 years. He was a graduate of the College of Advanced Traffic in New York City, where he received his Interstate Commerce Commission Practitioner’s license. Jim was a sales and marketing executive for 2 shipping lines, Waterman Steamship Company and Atlantic Container Line. Later in his career, he was the Director of Shipcard Advertising and Senior Vice President of Advertising for the Journal of Commerce, NYC. Jim Devine was a member of the New York Traffic Club, Whitehall Club, India House, and the NYC Downtown Athletic Club.
Jim was a long-time parishioner of Saint Francis of Assisi Church in West Nyack, New York and when retiring to Vero Beach, was a member of Saint John of the Cross Church.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen Devine; and son, Edward Devine. He is survived by his son, James and his wife Mary of San Francisco, CA; son, Paul and his wife Patty of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter, Anne Jorgensen and her husband Eric of Carmel, Indiana; daughter, Rita Devine and her husband Jim Brooks of Guilford, Connecticut; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Devine of Middletown, New York. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Finally, he is survived by his sister, Mary; brother, Jack; brother, Pete and his wife Margaret; sister in laws, Rose Devine and Peggy Devine; and many nieces and nephews in the wonderful Devine family.
The funeral mass will be held in West Nyack, New York at Saint Francis of Assisi Church on February 22, 2019 at 11:30 AM. Internment of the ashes will follow at the Blessed Mother Columbarium, Saint Anthony’s Cemetery in Nanuet, New York.
