James Milton Hassinger
June 18, 1926 - April 27, 2015
James (Jim) Milton Hassinger passed away peacefully at his home in Zionsville, Indiana on April 27, 2015. Jim was born on June 18, 1926 in St Louis, MO to Joseph Frederick and Bertha Martha (Crisp) Hassinger.
Jim attended St. Louis Public Schools and graduated from Beaumont High School in January 1944. Military service was in the Army Air Corps from November 1944 until November 1946. Jim graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science degree in June 1951, a Master of Education from St. Louis University in June 1961 and a Master of Science degree from University of Missouri, Rolla in August 1966.
Jim was baptized as an infant at Cote Brilliant Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, MO. He followed his faith throughout his life serving as a deacon and an elder at Presbyterian churches in the communities where he lived.
Jim had a strong work ethic, working at various jobs before beginning his career at Universal Match, St. Louis, MO in Research & Development. Jim made a career change in 1959 moving into the education field at Ritenour High School in Overland, Missouri. After a brief year as a Principal, he recognized his passion for teaching chemistry and retired after 31 years of service at Ritenour High School.
Jim was a man with solid family values. He made lasting memories taking annual family vacations driving throughout America and Canada, also hosting traditional family and holiday celebrations. He also served in leadership roles for both Boy Scouts of America and YMCA Indian Guides.
He leaves behind to cherish his wonderful memory; wife, Lois (Uffelman) Hassinger; son, David Hassinger; daughters, Becky Hassinger and Sara (Richard) Barnett; sister, Martha Strehle; grandchildren, Megan Hassinger, Stephanie (Ben) Niemeyer, Nicholas Barnett, Jesse Hassinger, Crystal Hassinger, Benjamin Barnett and Jonathan Hassinger; great-grandchild, Silas Niemeyer; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Bertha Hassinger; and brothers, Joseph and John Hassinger.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Grace Presbyterian Church in America, 7900 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250. Interment will at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashville, IL at a future date.
