Jan Alan Ford
69, of Indianapolis passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a brief illness. He was born October 3, 1943, to the late W. Al and Rosemary (Highsmith) Ford. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1961 and was an alumni of Texas Christian University where he majored in radio and television. Beginning at age 14 and through college, Jan served as the back-up voice for the Indianapolis Indians baseball club. Working with Jim McIntyre, who went on to broadcast for the Cincinnati Reds, Jan loved the friendly confines of old Victory Field on 16th Street and his imagination allowed him to breathe life into the teletype ribbon of baseball play-by-play when the Indians were on the road. He was "the voice" before there was "The Voice" and it served him well in his broadcasting, voice-over and DJ career thereafter.
Jan was an original WIRE-AM announcer when that station went Country. He had a successful career with ASCAP. Jan's friendships were enduring ones over the years. Thursday nights were "BNO-boy's night out" well after these boys became men, raised their own children, and became grandfathers, a very special thanks to all of the boys .Jan also worked in public relations, advertising, and free-lance writing for publications. Racing was in his blood as well, at least as a spectator; a special bucket list year was when he attended the Indy 500, LeMans, F1, Brickyard and the National Drags. Once the TCU Horned Frogs' football program was reborn, his Saturdays were all about the purple and white.
Yet none of this added up to his admiration and love for his wife, M. Anne Pinnick. She really was "the best thing" that ever happened to him and he readily knew it. (which is not to say that he would openly admit to the obvious.) She took great care of him on every level and he of her. Jan took very seriously his "job" of making her laugh every single day. Jan's son, Matt, was a comfort in his own right as the two ultimately shared a love for music. Matt is a DJ in New York City and Brooklyn.
Jan is survived by Anne; Matt; brother, Mark (Linda); nephew, Zach (Abby) Ford and their two children; and niece, Whitney (Eric) Dick and their two children. He will be greatly missed by the Pinnick family: Judith (Kenneth) Schickel; Joe (Marilyn), Ralph (Sandy), and Janice (Ted) Nave. Jan loved his family deeply.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Donna L. Ruark Recreational Fund at the Indiana School For the Blind.
There will be a calling on Tuesday, June 18, from 11:00 a.m. to Noon in the Gothic Chapel at Crown Hill Cemetery with a service to follow.
