Jane Eble died Friday, the 18th of August.
Born in 1928 and raised in St. Louis, MO, Jane's parents were Lyman and Mildred Brewer. Jane graduated in 1949 from the University of Missouri where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Jane married her high school sweetheart, Dr. John N. Eble, also of St. Louis, in 1950. They were very much in love until his death in 2006. After brief stints in Madison, WI and Kirksville MO, John and Jane moved to Indianapolis in 1960 and raised their three children, John, Mark and Lisa, in their home on North Delaware where they lived for 50 years.
While Jane was raising her family, she enrolled at Butler University and received her Master's degree in Library Science in 1966. Jane became the first full-time librarian at Orchard Country Day School in 1967 and shared her love of books with thousands of students until her retirement in 1989.
Jane loved to sing, play the piano and listen to music (Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Luciano Pavarotti were among her favorites), the theater, opera and reading, especially mysteries. Jane and John were active members of the Great Books discussion group at All Souls Unitarian Church. They were founders of a Gourmet Club in 1965 and participated in preparing extraordinary monthly dinners in members' homes. John and Jane played tennis frequently, both together and with friends, often followed by impromptu snacks and beverages on Delaware. While they most loved each other's company, these activities created deep friendships that lasted all their lives.
After the family lived in London for a year during 1969-1970, Jane and John shared a lifelong love of travel. Their trips were epic, blending theater, Michelin 3 star restaurants and countless museums, churches, bookstores and historical homes. They loved Italy, France and especially New York and London, and returned again and again for more than thirty years.
In her later years, Jane enjoyed volunteering at the library and recording books for the blind.
Jane is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and their extended families, all of whom gave her great pride and joy.
