She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart (New Orleans, LA) in 1938 and studied art at Newcomb College (New Orleans, LA). Joan lived many places during her life including Vincennes, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and Annapolis. She had many different jobs, including insurance clerk, nursery school owner/director, buyer for Wolf and Dessauer Department Store, sales clerk at Crossroads Flowers, and unit clerk at Parkview Memorial Hospital, but she would always say that raising her five children was the most fun and rewarding job of all.
She was a people person and was active in the community in many ways, including through Junior League, Welcome Wagon, as a Girl Scout Brownie Leader, and as a Hospice volunteer. In her later years, she proudly lived on her own and enjoyed playing bridge, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with friends and family.
Joan is survived by her sister, Jeanne Young, and by her children, Patricia Jones (Jim Fowler), Michael (Alice) Doyle, Jim (Judy) Doyle, Sally (Dan) Richardson, and Dana (Jeff) Cristee, and by her grandchildren, Chris, Peter, Jonathan, Jason (Miranda), Brenna, Whitney, Marie, Matthew, Jackson, Sam, and Joey, and one great-grandchild, Henry.
