John C. Bailey, M.D.
Dr. Bailey, a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, died peacefully at his home in Indianapolis the morning of September 6. Born in Linton, Indiana, Dr. Bailey earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University and an M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Bailey was on faculty at the IU School of Medicine for 40 years.
Dr. Bailey served 7 years as Commissioner of the Indiana State Department of Health, appointed by then-Governor Evan Bayh. Dr. Bailey's stewardship as Commissioner and lasting contributions to the field of public health have been recognized as a model throughout the country.
Dr. Bailey served in Vietnam as a surgeon in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, 4th Infantry Division. He was a member of Omega Alpha Omega Honor Medical Society and received numerous awards and recognitions from the IU School of Medicine, including the Distinguished Teaching Award and Charles Fisch Award.
Dr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 42 years, Maggie, and his sons Stefan, Colin and Joel; and daughters Emily and Beth. At Dr. Bailey's request there will be no funeral service.
