Lee Cohen Mallah

August 11, 1929 — October 31, 2018

Lee Cohen Mallah, 89, of Indianapolis, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Since her birth on August 11, 1929, Lee enriched countless lives through her inexhaustible strength, humor, warmth, and wit. She graduated from Manual High School. Following the passing of her late husband, dance partner, and love of her life, Joseph Mallah, in 1984, Lee remained engaged in her community and devoted to her family. She was a lifelong member of the Etz Chaim Congregation and the Deborah Sisterhood, maintaining her cherished Sephardic heritage from the synagogue to her kitchen counter. She enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra, retelling stories of Indianapolis' old south side, and making fast friends of strangers. She laughed hysterically, baked relentlessly, and cared unremittingly. As the keeper of memories, she was, and remains, an extraordinary hero in her family.

Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Mallah; brothers, Gilbert and Jack Cohen; sisters, Celia Klein and Marcie Sandler; and infant son, Ralph. She is survived by two sisters, Rebecca "Binnie" Kaplan and Esther Calderon; her beloved children, Gina Berger (Jay), Laurence Mallah (Brenda), Deborah Mallah, and Gloria Mallah (Lynn Smith); grandchildren, Amanda Hawkins, Lesley Mallah (Nolan Wingler), Jesse Berger, Alyssa Teitelbaum (Brad), Benjamin Linder, Jessica Mallah (Brock Dierks), Jobi Berger, and Jolie Mallah; and three great-grandchildren, Jackson Dierks, Lincoln Dierks, and Joseph Wingler. She loved each of them dearly.

A graveside celebration of Lee's life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, November 2, 2018, at Etz Chaim Cemetery, 2295 South West Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to Etz Chaim Congregation or the Deborah Sisterhood. Shiva will be observed at the Mallah residence, 1201 West 79th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260, Friday until sundown, Saturday after sundown and Sunday - Thursday from 1 PM to 8 PM.
