Special needs educator, treasured mother, sister, daughter, and friend Lois Paullus Smock, 69, passed away after a short illness on June 10th, 2023. She was born in Wabash County, Indiana, on July 17th, 1953 to Ernest (deceased) and Mildred Paullus.
Lois graduated from Southwood High School and then earned a BS in Special Education from Ball State University where she was affiliated with the Tri Sigma sorority. She continued her education receiving a Master’s in Special Education from Butler University. She felt the pull to work with students with the most severe of needs—a lifelong calling that demonstrated her unending patience, love, and caring.
Lois was very active in her community, heavily involved in PEO, Tri Kappa sorority, the Special Olympics, and the Shalom House. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a founding member of the Zionsville Presbyterian Church. Lois taught students with severe Special Ed needs in Lebanon Community Schools for 22 years, impacting the lives of so many with her kindness. She was rewarded for her years of exemplary service with the Outstanding Teacher Award as voted by her peers in Boone County.
Lois enjoyed reading and collecting antique toys, children’s books, glassware, and cookbooks. She loved watching old movies and had a soft spot in her heart for rescuing West Highland White Terriers.
Lois is survived by her mother ; daughter, Mary Thomas; grandsons, Jacob and Jonathan; sister, Jane Grimes (husband, Bruce); and nephews, Drew and Bryan. Her son, William K. Saint III, preceded her in death by two weeks.
A memorial service for both Lois and her son will be held at Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Road in Zionsville, IN, on July 22nd, 2023 at 3PM. Friends and family are welcome to visit from 1PM until the time of the service. The service will be live streamed. To watch live please click here .
