Marsha J. Heslin 77,
of Indianapolis, and formally of West Lafayette, died September 27, 2014, at her home. She was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island to the late Edward and Louise (McCooey) McMichael. She graduated from the Rhode Island College of Education with Honors in 1957, and married her college sweetheart, Dr. Richard Heslin. Mrs. Heslin started her teaching career in La Jolla, CA, where her husband was stationed as a Naval officer. In 1973 she joined the Lafayette School Corporation where she taught Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades at Miami, Edgelea and Washington Schools for 16 years while simultaneously earning her Masters in Counseling from Purdue University. She was as Elementary School Guidance Counselor from 1989 to 1999 and helped to supervise the Lafayette School Corporations grade school program.
She was active in the community as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), a Faculty Fellow at Purdue, a member of the Tri Kappa service sorority and a board member for the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
Her greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother, as well as impacting thousands of children's lives through her work. One of her favorite quotes was from teacher and scholar Forest E. Witcraft: "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child."
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Richard Heslin and her brother Peter McMichael. She is survived by her children: Dr. Bruce Heslin of Indianapolis, Tracy (Bill) Bock of Indianapolis, Paul Heslin (Kimberly) of West Lafayette, and Andrea Heslin Smiley (Dan Boeglin) of Indianapolis. Also surviving are her 14 grandchildren: George, Sasha, Walter and Henry Heslin; William, Micah, Sam, Isaac, and Haley Bock; Jessica and Christopher Heslin; Nicholas, Anna, and Gabrielle Smiley.
Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday October 1st at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary 11411 N. Michigan Rd, Zionsville, IN. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 2nd at the Crown Hill Cemetery Gothic Chapel. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Indianapolis Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
